✍️ Flinn Cite for Word

Summary:

Open Microsoft Word, launch the Flinn add-in from the Add-ins menu, and log in using the email and password credentials to your Flinn account.

After login, browse literature list (and optionally switch between the available saved searches/collections), then place your cursor in the document and use Cite on any literature item to insert a citation.

Finally, click Generate/Update References to create or refresh the references list at the end of the document; you can also remove a citation and update the references again to see the list adjust.

Open Flinn in Word

  1. Open Microsoft Word.

  2. Open any document (or create a new blank one).

  3. Open the Add-ins menu (e.g., Insert → Add-ins).

  4. Select Flinn to open the Flinn panel (On the right side).

1) Log in

  1. In the Flinn panel, enter the login details:

  2. Click Log in.

2) Browse and filter the literature list

After login, you will see a literature list (references).

To filter what you see:

  1. Use the toggle / selector in the panel.

  2. Choose one of the available saved searches/collections.

  3. The literature list updates based on your selection

3) Insert a citation into the Word document

  1. Click in the Word document where you want the citation to appear (place the text cursor).

  2. In the Flinn panel, hover over a literature item in the list.

  3. Click Insert.

  4. The citation is inserted at the cursor position in the document.

4) Generate or update the references list at the end of the document

After you’ve inserted one or more citations:

  1. Click Generate/Update References in the Flinn panel.

  2. Flinn creates (or updates) a references section at the very end of the Word document.

You can repeat this at any time—if you add more citations, click the button again to update the references list.

5) Remove a citation

  1. In the Word document, click on (or place the cursor inside) an existing citation.

  2. In the Flinn panel, click Remove Citation.

  3. Then click Generate/Update References again to update the references list at the end of the document.

6) Add multiple citations into the same citation bracket

You can combine multiple sources into one citation bracket:

  1. Insert the first citation normally (using Insert).

  2. Place your cursor on top of the existing citation in the document.

  3. In the Flinn panel, choose another literature item and click Cite again.

  4. The citation bracket updates to include multiple citations together.
