Which papers can I purchase?

Open-access papers load automatically with free full text — no purchase needed.

If a paper is paywalled, it is labelled Restricted in Flinn, as shown in the screenshot below.

You can purchase restricted papers directly from the full-text view, where Flinn shows the available license options.

🔍 Purchasing is currently enabled for PubMed and Google Scholar sources. Papers uploaded via Embase RIS files can't be purchased in Flinn yet.

How to purchase a paper

  1. Open a restricted paper — the Full text view shows the available license types

  2. Select a license by clicking Purchase license. The view switches to a purchase summary with the price and license details.
  3. You will receive an email once the paper has been loaded into Flinn.


If a colleague has bought a single license for a paper, you will see a Licenses button next to Full Text showing the buyer's name. In that case, you will not be able to open the PDF yourself.


Your license options

  • Personal License: Tied to one named user, who can view and download the PDF. The license can be reassigned to another user in your organization if roles change.

    ~€30–70 per paper

  • Shared License: Access can be shared among multiple users, with a set number able to use it at the same time.
    One person can view the paper at a time; access rotates automatically across your team. PDF download is not included. Best for teams that share papers but do not need simultaneous access.

    This license type does not grant you download rights.

    ~€40–90 per paper.
  • Global License: Enterprise-wide, unlimited user access across all sites. Not available by default, contact us to enable it.
  • Audit Add-on: Adds compliant external-use rights for a purchased paper, for example when you need to include or share the PDF for regulatory submission, audits, or notified-body review. It is purchased on top of an existing single or floating license.


Billing

💸 All purchases appear on a single quarterly invoice to your organization, including the user, paper, and cost. There is no separate billing step per purchase.
