🩺 Pubmed

PubMed has been integrated to offer the best quality and user experience possible to our users. Flinn provides a mirrored search engine which ensures that the results generated by a search on Flinn are the same as the results generated by the same search on PubMed (an exception can happen, as described below in the information section). Users can expect daily updated data with an optimized visualization of abstract information, as well as PMC PDF automatically linked and combined with their search results when available.

  • Due to the continuous labelling changes from Pubmed (regarding for example the Publication Type, Mesh Terms, etc.) the number of results might change depending on the day of executing, especially during the first 3 months after the initial publication. Nevertheless, we always have the search string and execution logged, so that we can always prove that status of results at any given time using our system logs.
  • Moreover, in rare instances, users can experience temporary differences in search results between Pubmed and Flinn. This is due to a delay of the data that Pubmed provides to Flinn compared to the Pubmed interface. However, this rare case of a delay lasts no longer than a few days.

It is important to note that the PubMed Books data has not been collected on Flinn yet and is therefore not accessible through Flinn. This decision has been taken considering the low quality of this "books" type on PubMed and the low interest of our users have for this section. If this data provides significant value to you, please let us know.

Implementation details

Query logic:
We have built our internal search engine to allow 2 things:

  • Our users can search using their old PubMed queries, including PubMed specific filters. To do this, you can just copy and paste any working PubMed query into our query builder and click on "see results" to fetch all relevant results.
    • Note that Pubmed queries only work for Pubmed. When searching in additional databases with the same queries, the Flinn query style should be applied
  • Our users can rely on the PubMed Mesh enrichment logic through our search engine.  Flinn will automatically enrich your query using the same Mesh terms logic as PubMed to obtain the same results as on PubMed.
